Bruno d'Alfonso occupies a unique place in the history of California wine because his career intersects with many of the people who defined the modern Central Coast. A Southern California native, he earned a degree in Soil Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before completing a second degree in Enology at UC Davis. That combination of practical agriculture and winemaking science became the foundation of a career built on precision, patience and just plain being smarter than anyone else, but not making a big deal of it.

His first professional opportunity came under the mentorship of the late Richard Graff at Edna Valley Vineyard. Graff was one of the true visionaries of California wine, introducing techniques such as barrel fermentation for Chardonnay and helping convince an entire generation that California could produce wines of world-class elegance rather than sheer power. After three vintages at Edna Valley, d'Alfonso was recruited by Richard Sanford to become the founding winemaker at Sanford Winery. Sanford had already changed the course of California Pinot Noir by establishing Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in what is now the Sta. Rita Hills. Over the next twenty-three vintages, Bruno became one of the principal architects of Sanford Winery's reputation, crafting wines that demonstrated the extraordinary potential of the region's cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Today, Bruno's own labels, Di Bruno and D'Alfonso-Curran, reflect the lessons learned from two California pioneers while expressing a style that is unmistakably his own. Rather than chasing ripeness or high scores, he has consistently favored balance, longevity and vineyard expression. His influence extends well beyond the bottles that bear his name. Through decades of work, Bruno d'Alfonso has helped shape the evolution of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA into one of the world's great cool-climate wine regions, earning him a reputation among his peers as one of California's finest craftsmen of Pinot Noir, while never forgetting the importance of restraint and authenticity in his winemaking. It is also rumored that Bruno still holds the record for the fastest time driving from State St. and San Marcos Pass Road to the flagpole in the center of Los Olivos, but that cannot be corroborated due to questions as to the length of the statute of limitations in Santa Barbara County.
