The 2020 Herman Story Late Bloomer Grenache is classic, go-with-almost-anything Grenache. It is far more polished than it first lets on. Sourced from a small collection of standout California vineyards, including the iconic Bien Nacido from Santa Barbara County and Slide Hill from the SLO Coast AVA, this is a 100% Grenache that spent nearly four years luxuriating in French oak barrels before release. That patience shows in the glass, where ripe red fruit, kirsch, and baking spice come wrapped in a texture that feels both generous and composed.

Grenache can sometimes lean either overly fruity or overly alcoholic, but this wine finds the sweet spot. Juicy raspberry and cherry notes up front, a subtle floral lift, and just enough savory spice and structure to keep things grounded. It’s rich without being heavy, expressive without being wild; it is, in a word: balanced.

Herman Story Wines was founded by Russell P. From in Paso Robles, and the wines reflect his personality. Serious craftsmanship paired with a sense of humor and zero interest in being precious or considered “normal.” What started as a tiny, seven-barrel project has grown into one of Paso’s most recognizable boutique producers, known for Rhône-inspired wines that embrace power, character, and storytelling in equal measure. The labels are pretty cool too. They’re classy in a way that only a mother could love.

This is a wine that shines at the table. Grilled lamb, slow-braised meats, sausages, or a well-curated charcuterie board all feel like natural companions. Decant for 30 minutes if you’re drinking it now, otherwise feel free to lose it in your cellar for a few more years. Like its name suggests, Late Bloomer rewards patience.
