100% whole cluster carbonic fermentation left on skins for 14 days. Orange marmalade, lemongrass, watermelon rind, lilac, and black tea flavors. It's dry and medium-bodied with complex, layered aromatics. A crushable AF orange wine (as the kids say)
The 2023 Groundwork Picpoul Carbonique is a fascinating orange wine perfectly embodying the experimental spirit of natural winemaking. Winemaker Patrick Cappiello, who runs Monte Rio Cellars and also makes wine under the Groundwork label, transitioned from being a New York sommelier to California winemaker, bringing his deep wine knowledge to crafting natural wines.
It’s 92% Picpoul Blanc, 6% Malvasia, and 2% Malbec that undergoes 100% whole cluster carbonic fermentation with native yeast and is left on skins for 14 days. The grapes come from two Paso Robles vineyards - 71% Beato Vineyard and 29% Derby Vineyard.
The wine sits at 12% alcohol and is easily one of the most enjoyable orange you'll encounter - perfect for hot summer days when you want something refreshing but with depth and character.
